Keothavong and Jugic-Salkic see off Aussies…

Anne Keothavong and Croatian partner Mervana Jugic-Salkic came through their first round doubles at the Australian Open on Wednesday.

The British-Croat pair eased past Aussie combo Sophie Ferguson and Jessica Moore 6-3, 6-2.

Their reward is a second round meeting with seventh seeds Maria Kirilenko from Russia and Italian Flavia Pennetta.

“Considering it was the first time Mervana and I had played together I think we did a pretty good job of beating the Aussies in straight sets,” Keothavong said.

“Mervana is very intense on the court and so am I so between us you could say we were very pumped up especially as they had a lot of vocal supporters and we didn’t want to give them anything to cheer about!

“It’s nice to get the win in the doubles after a disappointing singles performance and I’m looking forward to our next match against Kirilenko and Pennetta which will be a lot tougher.”
