GB chalk up their third 3-0 whitewash…

The AEGON GB Fed Cup team brought their Europe/Africa Zone Group 1 Pool A matches to a close on Friday with their third round robin victory in as many days.

After recording 3-0 successes over Hungary and the Netherlands on Wednesday and Thursday, today it was Luxembourg who were put to the sword, GB coming away with another 3-0 victory.

‘We wanted to finish things up properly to win the group in style’ – Nigel Sears

Mel South marked her Fed Cup debut by completely outplaying Fabienne Thill 6-0, 6-2 in the first rubber of the day. The match lasted little over 30 minutes with Thill only winning a handful of points in the first set.

British No.1 Anne Keothavong then continued her 100% record this week with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Mandy Minella, who offered little resistance.

The Luxembourg No.1 dropped her opening service game and despite having chances to break back early in the opening set, was never able to capitalise on them.

South and Sarah Borwell weren’t given the chance to show off their skills as Luxembourg pulled out of the remaining doubles rubber, handing Great Britain a 3-0 victory.

The Brits will be chuffed to have finished top of Pool A which puts them into Saturday’s semi-finals against one of the other three pool winners.

GB are likely to face either Belarus or Poland in tomorrow’s tie with the winner going on to a World Group II promotion play-off in April.

Captain Nigel Sears said he is delighted with the girls’ performances. “We wanted to finish things up properly to win the group in style and the girls certainly did that.

“I’m very happy with their performances in every match and they really deserve this opportunity to play for a promotion spot.”
