Virus ends Anne’s Belgium bid
Briton quits first round match…
Anne Keothavong’s challenge at the Koddaert Ladies Open ended in disappointment when she withdrew midway through her first round match on Tuesday.
The Londoner was trailing world No.271 Irena Pavlovic from France 6-2, 3-1 at the $100,000 Belgian indoor hard court event when she quit because of a virus.
The 25-year-old world No.53 had made a positive start to the tournament on Monday night when she won her first round doubles match with German partner Kristina Barrois.
But against French qualifier Pavlovic the effects of a recent cold became too much.
“I’m a little bunged up at the moment and have a chesty cough too although I’m hoping it’ll clear up soon,” Keothavong wrote in a blog prior to the event.
The Briton’s coach, Nigel Sears, who is with Keothavong at the event, explained: “Anne has had a cold virus coming into this week and had breathing problems during the match.”
