British No.1 into round two

Anne Keothavong made a successful start to her Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open campaign with a solid first round victory on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Londoner came up against Colombian qualifier Mariana Duque Marino, but was too good for the world No.124 during a 6-3, 7-6 victory.

The result puts the Briton into the last 32 at the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Premier event against Czech Lucie Safarova.

The winner of that match will potentially go up against top seed and last week’s Rome champion Dinara Safina.

“I’m obviously pleased to get a win here in Madrid which is a big event and to close it out in two sets,” said Keothavong.

“There was a lot of hanging around before the match because of rain and then a swarm of bees decided to settle on the net in the match before me which took the appropriate people a long time to get rid of. Most bizarre!

“Safarova is next on Tuesday and I’m looking forward to getting some revenge after my loss to her in Miami.”

What strength training exercises do you feel work best for you to strengthen your arms and add power to your shots?

From: Les

I prefer to do more lower body strength exercises for my body as that’s where you get most of your power in to your shots. Lots of squats and lunges.
