Anne makes a solid start in Midland in her first tournament back from injury

In her first tournament back from a serious knee injury, Anne Keothavong’s run through the rounds of the Dow Corning Classic in Midland, USA ended at the quarter-final stage.

The 26-year-old held two match points against Marta Domachowska but eventually succumbed to a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 defeat after the Pole battled back from the brink.

The defeat denied Keothavong a clash with fellow Brit Elena Baltacha in the last four of the ITF tournament.

“It’s disappointing to lose a match like today after having two match points but I’m pleased overall as I’m back competing again and this is just the start of my comeback,” she said.

“I had the match there for the taking and just lost a bit of focus, in the third set I was struggling physically and could barely move in the last few games.

“I’ve played more matches than I expected in the last two weeks and it’s taking a toll on my body, but hopefully I’ll recover in time for Memphis.”

Keothavong now moves on to Memphis for the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, where she reached the semi-final stage last year.

She will face Germany’s Kristina Barrois in the first round.
