Anne to face top seed in Fes

Anne flips Coin to set up Spanish test

Anne Keothavong recovered from a listless second set and bounced back from 4-2 down in the decider to defeat France’s Julie Coin 6-3 0-6 6-4 in the opening round in Fes.

The 26-year-old – who is currently ranked 32 places below world No.79 Coin – reeled off four games in a row in the final set to clinch a spot in round two of the Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem despite blustery conditions.

So much so that the British No.3 admitted on twitter afterwards: “The wind blew most of the clay off the court, wasn’t sure what surface I was playing on in the end!”

As reward for her battling victory, Keothavong will play top seed Carla Suarez Navarro in the second round in Morocco.

The pair met twice in last year, with Keothavong taking the honours in their first encounter in Auckland, before Suarez Navarro cancelled that out with a straight sets victory in Rome in their only career meeting on clay.

Ask Anne

Do you wear your socks more than once when playing on clay? What about shoes? How long do they last on the dirt?

From: Millie

I do wear my socks more than once but when you’ve played in a pair a few times on the clay they become permanently stained and that’s when they go in the bin. My clay-court shoes last about two weeks…
