Pennetta takes the win

Anne ousted by Flavia Pennetta at Roland Garros

Anne Keothavong has bowed out of the French Open in round one after falling to a 6-2 6-2 defeat to Italian 14th seed Flavia Pennetta.

Though broken four times by the former world No.10, the British No.3 managed a spirited display, holding her own in the baseline exchanges and firing a few winners to boot.

Glad simply to be out on court after being sidelined by a serious knee injury last year, Keothavong’s thoughts now turn to tournaments on home turf.

“I’m going into this year’s grass court season with a different mentality to last year,” said the 26-year-old Londoner. “I think what happened here [at Roland Garros] last year hit me pretty hard, and I put quite a lot of pressure on myself going into those grass court tournaments.

“Now having had six months out of the game I can look at things with a different perspective and I’ll just go out there, enjoy it, and give it my best.”

Keothavong will compete in Birmingham and Eastbourne before heading to Wimbledon.

Ask Anne

Do you plan the season to have different peaks of form according to certain tournaments or do you try to be regular through the year?

From: Juan

I try to stay as consistent as possible throughout the season but obviously it’s the Grand Slams where you want to do well the most.
