Anne defeats world No.62 Sofia Arvidsson in Denmark

Anne Keothavong is through to the second round of the e-boks Sony Ericsson Open in Copenhagen after beating world No.62 Sofia Arvidsson 1-6 6-4 6-3.

It took her a while to find her footing, but the 26-year-old Londoner eventually found her groove, fighting back from a set and a break down to defeat the Swede.

“I got off to a poor start and did a good job of spraying the ball everywhere outside of the court to go a set and a break down,” conceded the British No.3.

“But I hung in there and kept fighting and somehow managed to find a way of turning the match around. I only started to hit my spots on the serve towards the end of the match once I gained a bit of confidence.

Denied a place in the first WTA final of her career in Memphis earlier this year when the Swede defeated her in three sets, Keothavong was pleased to avenge her defeat in their last meeting.

“Sofia is a tough opponent and I’m glad to have got revenge after a tough loss against her earlier this year in Memphis,” she said.

“My next match will be another though one but I hope I can build on today and start to feel good about my game soon.”

Keothavong’s singles triumph in the Danish capital added to an excellent doubles victory with Anna Smith on Monday. The British pair defeated second seeds Marina Erakovic and ten-time Grand Slam champ Cara Black 6-4 7-5.

“I think that’s got to be one of the best doubles matches I’ve ever played against experienced opponents, especially Cara Black who’s won numerous Grand Slams,” said Keothavong.

“We’re up against the locals in our next match and there will be a partisan crowd but we’re both up for it and want to back our last win up with another.”
